About John

Dr. John Damianos, MD is a board-certified internal medicine physician and fellow in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to starting his fellowship, he graduated from the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine as a Medical Education Scholar and then completed internal medicine residency at Yale, where he achieved a Clinician Educator distinction.

Dr. Damianos treats patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, and he has particular interest in autoimmune gastrointestinal disorders (such as inflammatory bowel diseases, celiac disease, and eosinophilic esophagitis), disorders of gut-brain interaction (such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and pelvic floor disorders), and gastrointestinal motility disorders (such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, gastroparesis, and chronic constipation). From both a clinical and research standpoint, he is interested in the gut microbiome in relation to gastrointestinal disorders and how therapies that target the microbiota (including diet, probiotics, live biotherapeutic products, and fecal microbiota transplantation) can prevent and/or treat certain diseases.

In addition to his clinical and research work, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Alliance for Education on Probiotics, where he gives talks and writes about the latest advances in our understanding of the microbiome and specifically probiotics. He has also helped curate curricula for medical and pharmacy schools concerning the gut microbiome. He enjoys educating patients and clinicians alike about microbiome-targeted therapies, and helping to clarify and dispel the numerous myths surrounding "gut health" and the microbiome.
